Water in the Barn Yard

Drinking adequate amounts of water is one of the most important things to keep your body healthy. This is also true for our animal companions.

Water consumption assists with:

  • Preventing dehydration
  • Flushing out toxins
  • Increasing energy
  • Relieving fatigue
  • Regulating body temperature
  • And so much more!

  • Did you know that horses require around 12-15 gallons of water daily?! That’s a lot of water. Similarly, cows require around 10-15 gallons daily, donkeys require around 6 gallons, while goats, sheep and pigs need only around 1-2 gallons of water per day.

It is important to understand just how much fresh, clean water you need to provide for the animals that you’re caring for. A great way to figure this out is to determine the number of animals per paddock/pasture area and multiply it by the water requirement in gallons per animal to find out the daily herd demand. Large water troughs are usually essential in making sure large animals have their daily water needs met.

Having excess water on hand in a storage/holding area is also a great idea in the event of natural disaster or water outages of any sort. Being prepared in emergency situations is a must when caring for animals of any kind, water being an important piece when you need several gallons daily.
