Winter Tips Around The Farm
Feb 14th 2025
It’s no secret that winter weather is tough on the farm! Not only for us humans, but for our four-legged and feathered companions, too! Here are some tips to help soften the winter blues:
Shelter & Housing
- A minimum of a 3-sided shelter for animals is ideal.
- Ensure barns, coops, and shelters are draft-free but well-ventilated to prevent moisture buildup.
- Provide deep, dry bedding (straw or shavings) to help insulate against the cold.
- Provide elevated spaces for animals (chickens, goats, etc) who prefer to be off of the cold ground.
Water & Hydration
It is paramount that animals drink enough during the winter months to prevent dehydration which could lead to colic in some animals.- Prevent water from freezing by insulating buckets or troughs, using safe-trough heaters or breaking ice multiple times a day.
- Providing additional salt during feedings for horses can help ensure they drink their share.
Feeding & Nutrition
- Increase feed rations, as animals burn more calories staying warm.
- Providing warm mashes can assist on very cold days and nights.
- Provide good-quality hay and supplement with grain if needed.
- Ensure mineral and salt blocks are available.
Livestock Care & Health
- Check hooves regularly! Mud, ice, and snow buildup can lead to infections and make regular walking difficult.
- Monitor for frostbite, especially on ears, tails, and udders.
- Watch for signs of illness and contact your veterinarian right away if you suspect your animal is ill.
Equipment & Safety
- Keep pathways clear of ice to prevent slipping.
- Make sure doors, fences and other access points are clear of snow build up so you can quickly and easily access if needed.
- Check and maintain fences regularly.
- If using heaters for troughs and/or buckets, always keep an eye to ensure adequate water is in them to avoid overheating which can lead to fire danger.
