Fly Control on the Farm

May 22nd 2024

Are you and your animals sick of those pesky flies in the warmer months? Your usual go-to sprays not working as well or hoping to find something that might work better? Here are some various tips and products to give a try if you haven’t already.

    1. Manage manure.

a. Regularly pick stalls and areas your animals gather.

b. Regularly turn your manure piles.

c. Rake / break up larger pasture areas when you’re able.

2. Manage stagnant water.

3. Plant various plants and herbs that naturally repel bugs around the barn yard.

a. Basil

b. Bay Leaves

c. Catnip

d. Lavender

e. Marigolds

4. Install screens in doorways that allow, keeping air flowing but bugs out.

5. Add fans where you’re able particularly in a shaded area for your animals.

6. Good ole fashion zaps and traps.

7. Try Fly Predators by Spalding Labs – these tiny insects kill nuisance flies before they become adults, which means they are unable to reproduce and really lessens the numbers you swat all summer!

8. Ducks! You may have heard that chickens are great insect hunters, but ducks, especially Muscovy ducks are quite effective against insect pests.

Though some bug bites are inevitable, it’s always good to be prepared with a good itch-fix. Shop Here to get all of your scratching needs – Scratch n’ All pads and Scratch Me Silly’s are a huge hit in many farm yards!
